Abstract

Development of technological advances in agriculture in the Russian Federation determines not only production efficiency, but also the potential for the country's agro-industrial complex to achieve import independence. Improving the economic efficiency of agriculture is also becoming a priority. The novelty of this study lies in the establishment of new relationships: the impact of breeding advances on agricultural output, on the one hand, and the impact of agricultural sales profitability on the application of breeding advances, on the other. Data are examined for a group of regions that are largely specialized in agricultural production, as well as a group of other regions that regularly registered the application of breeding advances for the period 2017-2024. An analysis conducted using economic and statistical methods revealed differences in the structure of factors shaping the adoption of new breeding advances between the two groups of regions. Using Granger causality method, a one-way causal relationship was demonstrated between the dynamics of breeding advances' adoption and the growth rate of agricultural output in a sample of agricultural regions (at lag 1, the p-value was 0.0352; at lag 2, it was 0.0751). However, no such statistically significant causal relationship was demonstrated for the sample of non-agricultural regions. The profitability of livestock and crop production enterprises has a statistically significant impact on the application of breeding achievements in agricultural regions (30.4 units per 1% additional profitability). However, characteristics of the general research sector of regional economies have a significant impact only in the sample of non-agricultural regions, since an additional million rubles in the capital-labor ratio of research and development personnel increases the application of breeding achievements by 3.4 units. The obtained results of the study allow us to refine the focus of state support, including the need to combine breeding and seed production with a research base in agricultural regions and the development of mechanisms for transferring scientific results to production.
