Abstract

Improvement of mineral fertilizer use efficiency is one of the most important challenges in modern crop production. One promising approach for improving fertilizer application technologies is their localized subsurface placement, creating an expanded plant nutrition zone. The effectiveness of this method is largely determined by the uniformity of fertilizer granule distribution in the soil layer, which depends on the design parameters of the spreading elements of the working unit. The aim of the study is to justify the rational curvature radius of deflector plate of a working unit for subsurface application of mineral fertilizers. Theoretical studies were conducted based on an analysis of granule movement along a curved surface, taking into account the action of centrifugal forces and conditions for maintaining granule contact with the working surface. Numerical simulation was carried out using Discrete Element Method in Rocky DEM software package in order to clarify the influence of curvature radius on granule distribution pattern. It was found that curvature radius of deflector plate has a significant influence on the formation of strip fertilizer placement zone. The most uniform granule distribution is achieved with a curvature radius of 20 mm, at which the distribution uniformity coefficient reaches 0.92. Decreasing or increasing the radius relative to the optimal value leads to deterioration of distribution uniformity and localization of granules in certain sections of the furrow. The results can be used in the design of working units for localized subsurface application of granular mineral fertilizers.
