The study was conducted to comparatively assess the impact of no-till and traditional tillage on productive moisture accumulation in the forest-steppe zone of Middle Volga region. The work was conducted from 2017 to 2023 in Ulyanovsk region. The experimental design involved studying the following options: traditional tillage (plowing to a depth of 20 cm for winter and spring wheat, barley and 25 cm for peas); no-till (annually no tillage). The soil of the experimental plot is a typical heavy loamy medium-humus chernozem of medium depth with a humus horizon thickness of 79 cm, a humus content of 6.4%, mobile phosphorus and potassium (according to Chirikov) of 265...285 and 85...90 mg/kg, respectively, and a pH of 6.5...6.8 units. In spring, the tillage systems did not affect the water regime of the root-inhabited and 1-meter soil layers under crop rotation crops; the differences in productive moisture reserves between the variants in the 0...30 and 0...100 cm layers were 0.5 and 0.1 mm, respectively. Preservation of crop residues during no-tillage contributed to greater moisture retention before harvesting, compared to plowing, in both the arable and 1-meter layers, by 7.5% and 8.4%, respectively. The application of mineral fertilizers significantly reduced plant water consumption under both tillage systems studied. In the tillage system, water consumption decreased by 11.6% with the use of mineral fertilizers, while in the no-till system, this decrease was 20.9%, compared to the unfertilized control. The more significant reduction in water consumption in the no-till system is explained by the crops’ greater responsiveness to the applied fertilizers. Thus, under fertilized conditions, compared to the unfertilized control, the grain yield increase under tillage was 0.29 t/ha, while under no-till, it was 0.40 t/ha.
