spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), variety, biological value, ranking, crude protein, essential amino acids, pigs.Abstract
The study was conducted to comparatively evaluate hulled spring barley varieties for protein biological value. The work was carried out from 2022 to 2024 in Kama region of the Republic of Tatarstan. Methodology combined statistical methods with ranking of varieties based on their nutritional value for feed production. Significantly high values of crude protein content in the dry matter of grain relative to the average varietal value of 15.14% were recorded in Raushan (16.28%) and Vakula (16.46%) varieties, a low one was in Finist variety (13.28%). The highest amount of essential amino acids, in comparison with the varietal average (32.53 g/100 g protein), was noted in Finist (34.66 g), Lidar (34.62 g) and Endan (35.57 g) varieties, and the lowest - in Fortuna (30.72 g), Nur (29.24 g), Despina (30.59 g) and Raushan (30.82 g). Finist (4.40 g) and Endan (4.29 g) varieties had significantly higher lysine content than the varietal average (3.93 g/100 g protein). The first and second limiting amino acids in the grain protein of spring barley varieties – lysine and threonine – were identified, with average varietal scores of 55.6 and 59.8%, respectively. As a result of ranking based on a set of protein biological value indicators revealed that Finist variety had the highest rank sum (92 points). A negative relationship was established between the content of crude protein in grain and the content of lysine in protein (r=- 0.52), which was reliable at the 1% significance level. Data obtained have practical implications for quality breeding and forage production.
